Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Watch

1 April 2024 • by Bryan Oldham

The Long Winter is over, and Baseball is officially back. We are heading into the first full week of the season, and it’s time to start making some moves. Whether you need some relief help, need some dart throw hitters, or you’re hoping to find a permanent lineup fixture, there’s a little something for everyone.

Waiver Wire Hitters

Zack Neto, SS, LAA

Speed kills, and the MLB is quickly becoming a speed-forward league. Neto is batting at the bottom of an abysmal lineup, but we could get the opportunity to run rampant on the bases. There’s not much to love about the Angels, but Neto could see opportunity out of necessity. He’s not sexy, but has upside.

Oswaldo Cabrera, INF/OF, NYY

Cabrera looked excellent this weekend. As the Yankees went into Minute Maid and completed a 4-game sweep of the Astros, Cabrera and Juan Soto were the main catalysts for the team’s performance. Going 7/17 to start the year with 6 RBIs and 2 HRs is a great start, and there’s no reason the Yankees won’t find ABs for Cabrera, even when DJ LeMahieu returns.

Victor Scott II, OF, STL

An above-average glove, borderline elite speed, and a lineup desperate for something good. It’s a recipe for success for Scott, who already stole a base in his first 3 games. He has to cut down on the strikeouts (5 already), but when he’s on base, he’s dangerous. Know you’re getting the good with the bad here.

Will Benson, OF, CIN

When Will Benson is hot, you have to pay attention. He had a strong spring, and the injury to TJ Friedl paved the way for Benson to contribute immediately. Sunday saw him smack a mammoth homer to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, a game which the Reds would walk-off later that same inning. 3 of his 5 hits have been doubles, and he’s going to see plenty of ABs as the Reds compete in a strong division.

Relief Help

Abner Uribe, MIL

I’m convinced Uribe will be the closer for most of the year, and that if Devin Williams does come back this season, he’ll be slow to ramp up. We could even see Williams get traded, depending on where Millwaukee stands this summer. Hop on the train now, buckle up for some bumps, but enjoy the lotto ticket

Jason Foley, DET

Everyone thought Alex Lange was first in line for saves, but A.J. Hinch surprised everyone by going to Foley. If you can grab a guy who’s lined up for saves on a rising team, you’ll benefit massively.

Griffin Jax, MIN

With Jhoan Duran out, Jax is in line to get the bulk of the save opps in Minnesota

Other Hitters and Pitchers

There are lots of other options on the waivers this week, with some other mentionable names:

  • Jack Flaherty, SP, DET
  • Jared Jones, SP, PIT
  • Henry Davis, C, PIT
  • JD Davis, 3B, OAK
  • Michael Conforto, OF, SF

These guys are great plug-n-play options, and will give you the nice power bump you might need. Flaherty has turned back the clock, and could be a fantasy comeback player of the year candidate.
